Amsterdam, there is a new yoga studio in town and it is called The Breathing Space! I was invited by one of the founders, Mercedes Parellada, to attend a class. I did, and boy oh boy, I loved it. A lot! Why? You will find out if you continue reading. Please do, because otherwise, you will miss out.
How the Breathing Space began
The Breathing Space is founded by Mercedes Parellada and Lana Beex-Osborn. Mercedes is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and is a former ballet dancer. After fifteen years Mercedes exchanged her pointe shoes for a career as a manager in the Amsterdam hospitality industry.
To stay calm and in shape during her hectic life, Mercedes started to do yoga. What started as something to stay fit, quickly became a source of inner strength and balance for Mercedes. In 2009, Mercedes decided to do a yoga teacher training course. Soon after she graduated, she opened the successful yoga studio Hotpod in Amsterdam.
In 2017, she joined forces with her friend Lana. Lana used to work as a scientist. She also took a leap by deciding to devote her life to yoga. Lana and Mercedes share the passion for yoga. It was an only logical step to create a place in Amsterdam that honors yoga at the essence of its being. With that, the Breathing Space was born.
The mission of The Breathing Space
Lana and Mercedes want to create a place with The Breathing Space that represents the power, simplicity, and beauty of yoga. They want their studio to be a home for their students. Also, they want to guide their students on their way to personal growth.
For Lana and Mercedes yoga goes beyond physical exercise. Yoga is a way to discover who you are and to become a more powerful and confident person. At the Breathing Space, they guide you on this journey of self-awareness and growth.

My experience at The Breathing Space
What first struck me when I entered The Breathing Space, was the great vibe
and the beautiful interior. The tea garden is decorated with wooden furniture. On the walls, you find wood and all kinds of beautiful plants. The studio is clean, well-organized, and it radiates peace and warmth. That is exactly what I am looking for when I go to a yoga studio.
There is one studio where yoga classes take place. This space is also beautiful. Here you also find lots of wood and plants. In the classroom, you find spacious wooden lockers, where you can store your valuables. There is a beautiful altar and the smell of incense welcome you when you come in. The room is nice and warm. I like that during yoga. Especially in the winter. Also, everything you need for your yoga practice like mats, blocks, bolsters and other props are present.
I attended a classical Vinyasa Yoga class, given by Lian. She has been trained by Mercedes and Lana. She is a friendly, cheerful and spontaneous lady. She kindly welcomed me when I arrived, showed me around and guided me to my mat. I immediately felt comfortable and at ease because of her welcome.
The class started with a meditation, after which Lian guided us in a nice and powerful vinyasa flow. This was really what I needed! Lian’s instructions were good and clear. I could really tell that Lian knew what she was talking about. She gave all students plenty of attention and knew well how she could help us in a pose. At the end of the class, we were allowed to relax in our final pose Savasana. Tired, but very satisfied, I woke up from my final meditation.
Without exaggeration, this was one of the best classes I have attended in the past view months. I must have told Lian this about 20 times. But I mean it, my compliments for how she teaches a class.
The best gift to yourself
The best gift you can give yourself is a class at The Breathing Space. The class I attended was of a very high quality! It is a great studio, with teachers who know what they are talking about and really add value to your yoga experience. The Breathing Space is exactly what a yoga studio should be like. I think it’s clear, I’m a fan!
