My heart always beats faster when I discover courageous people who have the mission to make the world a bit more beautiful. Recently, my heart once again pounded in my chest when I discovered the vegan and sustainable clothing brand By Monkey. Its founders Rosj and Brenda (founder of the blog Vegan Monkey) have the mission to create a world without animal suffering with their vegan shirts.
How By Monkey began
Brenda and Rosj are both huge animal lovers. One day Brenda wanted to do something to end animal suffering. She called Rosj (her brother-in-law), told him about this desire and suggested to start their own vegan and fair clothing brand. Rosj was immediately on board.
Brenda, who is also a designer, went to her drawing board and designed three different designs for their first collection. A few months later By Monkey was born and Brenda and Rosj officially became entrepreneurs with a higher purpose!
A world without animal suffering
The mission of By Monkey is to create a world without animal suffering. A world in which animals are treated with empathy, and in which animal suffering is a thing of the past. Therefore, the shirts from By Monkey have a clear message: veganism is the way to go! This message is transmitted in a subtle way through the appealing designs.
Good for the earth
Besides wanting to improve the life of animals, By Monkey also wants to contribute to a healthy clothing industry that is good for the environment and for people who make our clothes. Brenda and Rosj have gone down to the last detail to make this happen.
All shirts are made from GOTS certified organic cotton and Tencel. This ensures that the cotton has not been treated with pesticides and that the entire production process is free from toxic substances. In addition to the GOTS certificate, By Monkey also has the Earth Positive, Fair Wear Foundation, and Carbon Trust certificates. These ensure sustainable and fair production.
Co2 neutral production
The shirts from By Monkey are completely CO2-neutral. This is because the entire production process is performed with the use of renewable energy. Furthermore, durable textiles are used. These two combined ensure that the shirts have a 90% lower emission than a standard cotton shirt.
Water-based, plastic-free ink
The By Monkey Shirts are printed with vegan water-based ink. This is free of plastisol. Plastisol is a separation of PVC which is cheap, sticks easy and produces brighter colors. However, it is not biodegradable and therefore harmful to the environment. The water-based inks used for the By Monkey shirts are better biodegradable. In addition, no chemical products are needed for the cleaning the sieving machines. And this is also better for the environment.
The water-based ink is also vegan and cruelty-free. The shirts are printed on a silk-screen printer which does not use gelatin, but a vegan emulsion. Therefore, the shirts are 100% vegan!
Good for humans
The shirts from By Monkey are produced in the Netherlands, Turkey, and India. This is done in workplaces that work according to the code of conduct of the Fair Wear Foundation. They guarantee that the garment workers work under good conditions and get a fair wage for their work.
My By Monkey shirt: Herbivore
I got the Tencel top “Herbivore:” from By Monkey. This shirt is designed with a cute dinosaur. I did not pay enough attention to Jurassic Park to tell you what kind of a dino it is, but it’s clear that it’s an herbivore.
I fell for this shirt because it states that I am a vegan in an endearing and subtle way. This shirt is made of Tencel. Tencel is one of my favorite textiles because of its high quality, the environmentally friendly production, and silk-like texture. The shirt also fits this description, so that is great! I have already worn and washed the shirt a couple of times and it still looks good.
The Tencel top is a bit larger than I expected. I ordered a size M and it is a bit too large. I solve this by stuffing it in my pants, so no one can notice and the “problem” is solved. This might be a good thing to keep in mind when you order your shirt.
Order your own By Monkey shirt and improve the world
I admire and respect how Rosj and Brenda have set up their vegan fashion brand. They did this with the utmost care and that only underlines their mission to make a difference.
If you are looking for a nice shirt, take a look at the By Monkey webshop. They sell shirts both for women and men!
Did you know By Monkey? What do you think of their shirts?
This article was created in collaboration with By Monkey. However, this did not affect my opinion on By Monkey.
